Google has acquired Picnik — the popular online photo editor that has been steadily gaining the attention of the masses. Google’s reason for this acquisition is as obvious as ever. They are slowly building up their arsenal of online services and web apps as they inch closed to their Chrome OS launch. Even without the OS, they are constantly trying out new ways to do traditional computing works via the browser.

Microsoft is the latest mega-company to realize the power of inbuilt online social networking in mass market products. This is apparent from their introduction of social features into the latest version of Outlook — Outlook 2010. In this new version, Outlook will have the ability to pull information, pictures and updates from social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace.
Building successful online social networks is not exactly Gooogle’s strong point. Their only globally successful such network is (arguably) YouTube and it was built by someone else and Google just bought it. No one cares about Google Video. Some haven’t even heard of it. Orkut was a lame attempt but it became immensely popular in India and Brazil. Now it is starting to look more and more like Facebook. There was also a Twitter like service called Zaiku but that didn’t catch up either and Google open-sourced and forgot about it.

Siri is an iPhone App and it is free. But unlike the many free apps on the App Store, it has the collective forces of DARPA and Stanford U (AKA Super Geek central where the Valley shops for talent). This is an app that acts like your personal assistant and all you have to do is speak to it. Yes, it actually recognizes what you say and executes accordingly. But it is nothing like those spoken shortcuts and Google voice input. This once actually understands what you are saying and doesn’t just match keywords and follow a template. Welcome to future, dear reader.

As an extension of the Google Docs service, Google has added a 1GB online storage that accepts any file type as long as it is below 256MB per single file. Google has always been in the forefront of providing everything you need online and this comes as yet another product in that line. Long time internet users will remember the time when sending a 1MB attachment on a free email service was a big deal and free POP/IMAP access still isn’t found that easily outside Gmail. Now you can send up to 100MB per email (correct me if I’m wrong) on Gmail and we have had free POP/IMAP access for a long time.

Skype is perhaps that one key service on which multiple important new media depend to make their daily itineraries work. Without it, online new media outfits would never be able to hold conferences as easily TV stations do at a miniscule fraction of the cost. TV stations use live satellite uplinks. Those are expensive, as in you will sell all your possessions but will never make it kind of expensive. High speed internet is not that expensive and for businesses, hiring a high bandwidth line is actually profitable because of the increase in productivity. This is where services like Skype comes in. But so far, all of this has been confined to laptops and computers. You had to sit in front of your tiny desktop/laptop screen and enjoy the chat. Now you can liberate your chat from the confines of your computer and enjoy it in HD (720p) on your new LG or Panasonic Internet connected HDTV.

The iPhone has really fuelled the imagination of innovators and they are currently busy bringing out all sorts of crazy add-ons and accessories for the device. The same has happened to the iPod Touch. Even though it is technically part of the iPod line of media players, everyone (rightly) regards it as the phone-less iPhone.
