Bowtie is a fun little app for Mac users that lets you customize your iTunes playback experience. It is essentially an iTunes controller like Ecoute or CoverSutra. It allows you to enjoy and control your iTunes playback through customizable shortcuts and displays your album art as well. Not only that, it also sends your songs to Last.fm while marking the songs you love and the songs that you ban. Everything is extremely customizable in Bowtie and that is the main fun of it. It is extremely theme friendly and has numerous official and user made themes to choose from, making sure that it will completely suit your taste.

You can completely modify how everything is displayed on your desktop. So even when iTunes is running minimized, you can run rate, skip and view the album of what is playing. If you have not used anything like this yet, you should really try it.

The 1.0 upgrade is a major one and it really takes the app forward in many ways. It now has a smaller memory footprint, an improved Last.fm connection and is fully ready for future extensions. Out of the many features of the extensively tested alpha and beta of this version — the search function is not there on the final release. According to the developer, it was not included because the feature was still buggy and caused a lot of problems. Search allowed you to search and play your songs directly from Bowtie. It is part of the roadmap though and might soon be integrated.

Bowtie is now also available for the iPhone. This brings forth a whole new world of laziness possibilities into the equation. Love Bowtie? Do you regularly play music from your iPhone/iPod Touch but can’t be bothered to move your lazy behind from the sofa to the player dock? Not to worry — there’s an app for that! The Bowtie iPhone app allows you to control your music on your iPhone/iPod Touch through the Bowtie for Mac or the Bowtie iPhone Controller for Windows. So no matter the platform, you can be extremely comfy on your bed and do all kinds of things to the songs playing on your iPhone/iPod Touch.

Bowtie is overall a great app to use and its complete customizability is sure to win you over. iTunes is great for doing power playing but if you want it to get out of your way and still allow you to control your music, iTunes controllers are the way to go for sure.
