Chrome For Mac Updated, Now Has Extension Support

The Chrome browser is the kind of browser that we bloggers dream of. It is fast, more or less reliable and completely respects the fact that we need as much screen real-estate as possible. Google’s sense of minimalism on the Chrome almost rivals Apple’s minus the finesse of the latter. So Chrome for me is a browser with a lot of potential. However, since I am a Mac person, I do not get to use Chrome like my Windows counterparts do because Chrome for Mac is still in beta. However, the latest update to this piece of software is likely to please a lot of people.

Soon after Google added support for extensions on the Chrome browser end of last year, they were quick to port Greasemonkey over to Chrome as well. We all know how much the FireFox community benefits from Greasemonkey and general extensions, so Google wanted to recreate that for Chrome as well. Mac users of Chrome were neglected at that time, probably because of the beta stage of the browser.

Now, Google has finally gone the whole hog and added extension support on Chrome for Mac as well. This really completes Chrome’s existential balance on the major two OS’ in the market today. Also on the update is bookmark syncing, which definitely a very handy feature to have. This will basically allow Mac users to synchronize their bookmarks over multiple machines so that there is no need to re-bookmark all the bookmarks each time they change machines. And if you’re like me and have to use search on Bookmarks to find what you are looking for, bookmarking beyond the regular few will be summarily ignored.

But the bookmarks will be missed as well during use, thus lowering the over all user experience. So this move will really help Chrome for Mac to grow on its users. As it is we Mac users are spoilt by a well-designed OS, so it is much harder for us to use something that does not think of how the users would want to use it.

There are currently around 2,200 extensions for Chrome at this moment and now they are all available on Chrome for Mac. If you add in the Greasemonkey script numbers, then the total get about 40,000 extensions added to it. So over all, Chrome users on a Mac will have a much better time doing what they want to do on the browser and not have to worry about missing features that a small number of people would like to have.
