As the internet continues spreading through the nooks and crannies of this tiny little planet of ours and as bandwidth continues increase, data consumption delay is going down everyday and things are pushing more and more towards real time data consumption. The major boost to this was definitely twitter and now that search engines have adopted real time search results, the world is now expecting information to reach them as it is posted across the web. That includes social networks that have opened up their data, like Facebook and services like twitter, Posterous, etc. However, displaying focussed real time information wasn’t easy, till a new crop of start ups made it easy for us. There was OneRiot and then there Collecta.

Now, Collecta has launched a customizable widget building service that allows you to customize a widget to display realtime results from single or multiple keywords continuously. Much like the flash twitter widgets but more all encompassing. You can post this widget anywhere on the web where you can embed a few lines code. The service includes results from varied sources such as Flickr, WordPress, CNN, Reuters, The Associated Press, etc. So you are never out of the loop and neither are your readers/visitors.

Parts of MySpace are also driven by Collecta. The two companies collaborated to index and display real time results for things posted on MySpace like comments and MySpace blogs. The breaking news page on MySpace that displays Haiti related news is powered by Collecta, for example.

This widget is definitely going to be a big help for webmasters and bloggers everywhere  as it will help them to make their online service much relative. It may also be seen as yet another value addition feature for the page. However, with more widgets become available over time, webmasters will really have to decide on which ones to keep because every additional widgets slows the page load time. Even though bandwidth is increasing constantly, there is also the processing ability of a computer to take into consideration. Especially when lowered powered mobile devices are becoming the chosen devices for internet browsing.

Collecta on its own is a standalone search engine that collects data from the various services mentioned above. It also allows you to share things on social networks like Facebook and on aggregators and bookmarking services like StumbleUpon ad Delicious. Collecta is barely half a year old and was launched in June last year.
