Google, The Phone Lives On

Looks like the Google Phone is here stay. Either that or the rumors are really persistent to the point that it seems like the phone is real even though it is not. But I think it does not deserve that much skepticism because the logic and the multiplicity is pretty convincing.

According to a source dug up by Gizmodo, not only is the Google Phone real but it will actually be the most advanced smartphone till date. Does that mean the source thinks it is better than the iPhone? Perhaps so. But that is probably because this phone is going to be very different from everything that we see so far.

Physically, the phone is your typical it seems. It has a big touchscreen, QWERTY keypad and everything. Sounds like just the kind of phone that you would want if you buy it right now. But it will not be a regular phone.

The source in this case has actually seen the Google Phone in person. He (or she) says that the phone is running a hitherto unseen and unreleased version of Android. It may be Flan (step after Doughnut) or it may be something else. But this is definitely getting interesting now. Apparently, the phone is going to be distributed around the Mountain View campus very soon. Which means they have at least moved past the prototyping stage.

If the phone is really going to supplied to the employees for mass testing, it is obvious that it will be in some kind of Beta. So a 2010 release can be counted on earily. Apple is undoubtedly preparing for quite a year. With the next generation rumored to be 4G LTE and also on Vodafone in the US and with rumors of the iPhone nano emerging again, Google may be aiming at taking some of that thunder away from Apple.

But Google’s approach communication is likely to be internet-based instead of traditional connection based. That is where the twist lies in this phone. So it will not compete with the iPhone directly. But it might as well be the closest thing to an iPhone-killer in the market.

An very interesting remark was made to this source. The Android that we see and use is not the real Android. What statement means – we can only speculate. However, it is certain that if Google is taking enough pain to make a phone, they will make something that is not your average phone. After all, they really want us to be online. Forever.
