Google Phone rumors are a resilient lot — they refuse to die. And now that it looks like they might be right after all, you can expect to hear more about them. The trick here is that Google may not be making a phone after all. That is because they say that they will not compete with their own partners, which does make a lot of sense.
So where is all of this coming from? Respected tech journalist, Michael Arrington, reports that Google is indeed working on its own phone and no, it is not the HTC Dragon. Although he does say that Android top brass is currently carrying that phone around and testing it out. According to his sources inside Google, the Google phone is being made by a Korean manufacturer and HTC is a Taiwanese company.
Google’s Android phone is all about how Google envisions the modern day smartphone. They would really like to see that vision fulfilled in all its glory, no doubts about that. But since Android is so very open and customizable, everyone will impose their own will on it when making their own phone with it. So It would make sense for Google to make their own phone and show the world what they really intend the Android experience to be like. And the only way to do that is to make their own phone. But there is a problem.
Since they now have multiple partners who are making Android phones, they cannot afford to become competitors themselves and upset their partners. But Techcrunch insists that they are making a phone according to their own specifications. No compromises are being made about the entire project and every last bit of details is overseen by Google. So there is this one theory that they are actually making a VoIP handset that would not have GSM or CDMA support. Only data networks would be supported. So it will be more like an MID the size of a standard smartphone with Google Voice in place of a real phone service.
There is also the chance that one of their own partners has decided to follow their instructions to the letter and fabricate the phone for them. Now that would be interesting — seeing what Google really thinks about how a modern phone should be like. Stay tuned, more updates coming soon I am sure.
