Transformers Tigatron USB Drive

Transforming-Tigatron-Flash-Drive_004

This is something that is going to be completely after the hearts of Transformers fans. With the new movie still around, the Transformers fever is running high. Some may think that it is a kiddy thing but they will be surprised to see how many ‘grown-up’ kids are sworn fans of the Transformers. So what is this device here?

Well, it is a USB flash drive with a twist just. It is modeled after Tigatron (A character from the Beast Wars Saga of Transformers). It is actually a very cleverly designed toy that can be folded in to a standard USB flash drive and can be  folded out to show Tigatron in Beast mode. Okay, so the folded version will not look like a standard USB flash drive.

As you can see in the pictures, it looks more like a complicated puzzle than a USB drive. You can hide the USB head to make the transformation into the folded state complete. Other than the Tigatron part, it is a standard USB 2.0 flash drive.

Transforming-Tigatron-Flash-Drive_003These drives come with a 2GB memory and support all OS’s that support Universal Serial Bus. That means you can run them on pretty much all modern OS’, including Windows, Mac OS, Linux and even Solaris. It has backward compatibility with USB1.1 ports and hence can be used on a wide variety of machines. It comes with a 2GB capacity but that does not matter for the hardcore fans. It could come with a 2MB capacity for all they care.

That is because most of the sites that stock items like this cater to fans who are looking for collectibles. They want something that is a real device but they do not want to use it. This might seem a bit odd to people who are not collectors but the value of a collectible is diminished if you take it out of the original packaging.

That is why, if you visit one of these sites you might see two types of shipping. One is standard and the other for collectors. The difference being that for collectors, the company will carefully choose packages that are in the best condition. There are also grades to judge ‘mint condition’. The collectors usually demand 90% (c9) or higher. There’s an extra charge too.

So there you have it. This USB flash drive will make for a perfect gift to a fan. You can also get one for yourself because it looks pretty cool. Also available is a black ‘Razor’ model.

BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac is Finally Official!

MacDesktopSummaryRIM has finally made the BlackBerry Desktop Software official. The rumors have been flying thick and fast since long before this announcement, so it surprised no one. The features look really good and include all the things that Mac-owning Blackberry users have been demanding for a long time. Back in December last year, RIM (Research In Motion – Makers of the Blackberry Line) gave Mac users the preview version of the BlackBerry Media Sync Software. That was just a teaser it but did what it was said to do quite well.

Now, we have the full fledged software that does everything including media. It is not available yet but the company has released a list of features and several screenshots via the blog.

MacDTM_AppUpdateProgress

First on the list (displayed on the official blog post) are the various sync features that the software will have. It will sync with your calendars, notes, tasks, contacts and even iTunes playlists. Except for that iTunes part, everything is geared towards making the life of  a busy executive just a bit easier. If you have a Mac and a BlackBerry, chances are that you have a lot of these things on both and now you can keep both sets in tandem.

Next we have the add/remove applications feature. This will be a great relief to the Mac+BlackBerry users because now they have a more comfortable way of managing and maintaining their applications.

Talking about maintenance, the software also lets users update their BlackBerry whenever updates are available. So you can just get in to the habit of regularly syncing your Device and the rest will be taken care of by the software.

MacDesktopSummary

Another very important feature for corporate clients is the data backup and/restore feature with optional encryption. The data carried by the BlackBerries of the top executives is often of a very sensitive nature. Thus the having an encrypted back up is always a good thing.

The last feature is a very thoughtful addition. The Desktop Software features support for using multiple devices. This is can come in handy for couples who share a computer and own a BlackBerry each. This is also handy for people who have more than one BlackBerry (yes, there are people like that).

The new BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac OS X will support versions of 10.5.5 and later. The posts says that the software will be available in September this year. Looks like it will worth the wait.

Amazon’s first step towards totalitarianism

amazon-kindle-2 - nope. you don't own what you buy. they just let you keep it till they delete it.Amazon has given everyone a scare by doing something quite outrageous. It has reached in to the Kindles of many of its users and it has deleted two specific books without notifying or asking the user’s permission. The users woke up to this fact when they got refund emails from Amazon, refunding their purchase of those two books.

The whole hue and cry started over at the Kindle Community on the Amazon forum where a confused user started thread asking explanations for what was going on.

In its email, Amazon told its users that publishers can withdraw books from circulation. The company said that although it was a ‘rarity’ the publishers could do so. Now this is not offensive in any manner except for the fact that Amazon decided to delve in to the Kindles of its customers and delete those two offending books. The questions here is – does that mean the customers do not own their copy of the e-books they buy? Can Amazon really delete things just like that?

the kindle store

The two books are ‘Animal Farm’ and ’1984′ by George Orwell. The publisher who sold these books at the Kindle Store is called MobileReference. They format and sell books that are in public domain i.e. books that do not have an exclusive copyright.

Amazon was apparently informed that those two books are not in the public domain in the US as of yet and hence Mobile Reference is infringing copyright. To say that Amazon took drastic action would not be saying too much at all. Amazon has said that the system will be changed so that users do not suffer when if something like this happens in the future but there’s a bigger question here.

Why was this system to remotely and selectively wipe a Kindle ever there in the first place? What was Amazon planning to do with it when it was developed? Scary thoughts indeed.

Touch Your Netbook!

the touch notebook from Asus

Asus has introduced its latest hybrid device – a tablet netbook and that too under $500. So you have a new tablet in town and arguably the cheapest tablet ever. So what is this mystery device? Well it is the new addition to Asus’ Eee PC series – the T91. The ‘T’ is probably for touch.

The most interesting part here is that  Asus has provided a custom touch interface that layers on top of the OS. The OS in this case is not Linux, as many wish it to be. It is the boring-but-stable-unlike-Vista Windows XP. The Custom touch Interface is called Touch Gate. It can be launched from the desktop shortcut and from the eee-dock-bar (much like the OS X dock). It can also be launched directly from the bezel with a physical button that is located there.

The Touch Gate interface is surprisingly good but it should not be compared with the iPhone. The T91′s has a resistive touchscreen  so you can use anything on it but you need to to be firm and precise. Asus includes a non-active stylus with the netbook and you will need for sure it if you try to use Windows XP with the touch pad.

The Touch Gate bundles along some useful software for the touch interface. One is a gestures enabled version of Internet Explorer (why not Mozilla?) and another is a notepad type software that makes it easier to take notes in tablet mode. The screen can be rotated and folded to make it a complete tablet. A button on the bezel changes the orientation of the display.

The Touch Gate interface has  another feature – support for Yahoo Widgets. Rather it has widgets built on the Yahoo widgets platform and hence more can be downloaded from Yahoo. These widgets come on a second screen in Touch Gate. You have to flick your finger on the right edge of the screen to bring it up. If flick your finger in that area again, it will take you back to the Windows XP Desktop.

The iTalk Clock: You Talk and It Talks Back!

the italk clockThis is a clock that is will really get you talking. It is a clock that is meant to be talked to, so you will literally be talking to do everything with this phone. Developed by a company called Neutrano, this is a voice recognition enabled clock that can understand spoken commands. It is voice independent, so it won’t act like a trained security dog.

Okay, so you have to know what to say to it but it is quite intuitive really. So when you want to set the alarm, you say, “set the alarm”. When you want to know what time it is, you simply go “what time is it?” And so on and so forth. The amazing thing is that you do not have to touch it for anything at all. Everything can be done through the voice.

So if you are trying to set the alarm, the time, the date or even the alarm tone – all you have to do is talk to it. The clock comes with built in alarm tones that you can use. You can ask the clock to play the alarm tones and then speak the number of the tone that you liked. iTalk will then tell you that you have selected a tone and it will also play it back for you so that you can confirm that it has got the right one.

Now of course, with voice recognition there can be problems. If the clock is always listening in, it might start talking and doing things when you do not want it to do things. Thankfully, the company has a solution for this. So before you start speaking to it, you address it! Yes, you say “Hello iTalk” so that it knows it is being talked to. Then you can start saying whatever you want to. You have to repeat that address every time you start talking but once you start you can go on saying things and it will know you are talking to it.

However, it will not respond if you are talking about your neighbor’s dog keeping you awake all night. Talking about night, its bright 2” LED display is very prominent and easy to locate at night. There is a brightness setting however. Here’s the part that I like the best. You have to say ‘Hello iTalk’ every time you start speaking but when its alarm goes off – all you have to do is say, “snooze”!

The TekCase for your DSi

the pink incarnation of TekCaseThe DSi is pretty sleek and nice. It looks good and it feels good in your hand. You could’ve played with it for hours. You could’ve – because the battery life plain bites. To get a halfway decent battery life on the DSi, you have to lower the brightness. If you have the brightness up, it’s going to die on you very soon. So under these circumstances, it was only a matter of time before some company took notice of the growing discontent.

DSi TekCase – Pink

It would’ve been lovely if it was Nintendo (may be they have noticed, who knows) but for now it is company called TeknoCreations. They seem to have other gaming related product but this one would please DSi users.

If you want longer battery life (we are talking 10-15 hours here!), you have got to check this one out. For those of you who are willing to sacrifice the looks of your DSi, you can buy the TekCase for DSi from this company. What the Tekcase does is mainly act as an add-on battery pack. It also protects your DSI by covering the entire device with its own outer shell. The outer shell is made out of polycarbonate materials and hence is very strong.

The extended battery life is what we are focused on right now. The site says that it can almost triple your playing time. Real life users say that it can easily give you a 10-hours battery life even with the brightness kept on full. So if you are willing to keep the brightness at about 50%, it is possible to achieve about 15 hours of battery life.

The best part about the TekCase is that it is designed in a way that allows you to do everything with your DSi without having to take the TekCase off. So the controls are exposed, the camera is usable and the cartridges are easy to pop in and out. When it comes to charging, you can charge both the DSi and the TekCase at the same time through USB or the included AC adapter.

and the balck version :phew:So this case not only extends the battery life, it also protects your DSi. However, the change to the looks is a bit off a turn off. Not many would like to do this to their DSi. The weight difference is not that much either.

Windows Marketplace for Mobile to finally opens up to 6.x users

Windows Marketplace bannerMicrosoft has announced that the Windows Marketplace for Mobile will support Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 users by the end of this year. The company announced this at this year’s Worldwide Partner conference. Windows Mobile 6.5 support will be available immediately.

This is a very important move for Microsoft because this will ensure that developers can tap in to the current Windows Mobile users. The company has given an in-house estimate of 30 million such users. The company has also declared ill start accepting submissions for the marketplace from t he 27 of July, which is only 11 days away. The company will then start testing and certifying these apps for the launch.

The store is set to launch simultaneously with the new Windows Phones (a new name given to phones running on Windows Mobile). This is supposed to happen sometime this fall. Microsoft is also planning to start a consumer focused ad campaign to build up awareness about the Windows phones. If these ads are anything like the ads from the ‘laptop hunter’ series, we will be in for some laughs for sure.

The objective that Microsoft that Microsoft is trying to achieve here is very obvious. It is trying to create something similar to the Apple App Store for the iPhone. However, Microsoft will have overcome more than a few hurdles. First of all, the Windows

the markplace menu

Mobile Market is fast shrinking. This is mainly thanks to the multiple alternatives available today. Windows Mobile is directly up against the constantly growing iPhone, the newly launched WebOS, the Google Android Platform and the ever-present Symbian platform. With the combination of all these, Microsoft is going to have a very hard time convincing people to buy the new ‘Windows Phones’.

Another hurdle is the fact that a few of the mobile handset manufacturers and mobile network carriers are planning to have their own marketplaces to sell software to their users. So that would mean more resistance towards Microsoft’s Marketplace for Mobile plans.

Microsoft has been losing on its home ground since a long time by trying to push closed and proprietary solutions. It failed with its WMA and WMV codecs when mp3 was adopted by all and now they are trying to push Silverlight as an alternative to flash. Has someone told Microsoft that they join in way too late?

The Sony X-Series Walkman

The cool new X-Series Walkman from SonyWith everyone going touch these days, there was hardly any doubt ever that Sony too will soon join the race. Although a bit late following the iPod Touch, the new Sony X-Series is finally out. It is a fantastic touch screen device and with a design to match. It sports a full metal body and although it is not as slim as the iPod Touch, it is still eminently pocket worthy. The textured metal surface is reminiscent of a Geode (a kind of rock) and looks very nice. The weight also makes it feel expensive, which it is.

Sony Walkman X Series 16 GB Video MP3 Player w/ OLED Display

It has a built in WiFi feature that allows it to have the Slacker radio player and a YouTube video player built in. It has a basic web browser and also allows subscribing to podcasts. So as soon as you have a WiFi network nearby, it will update itself. Same goes for the Slacker radio, it just caches new music whenever you are online. It is free but supported by advertisement, so you have to suffer through a few of them. There is a skip limit when it comes to skipping ads.

But these are the extra features. It has everything that you can expect from a standard personal media player. The UI is something that you just have to use to understand how great it is. It has this really quirky and fun to use UI that tilts the line up of thumbnails when you are scrolling through it. The UI is really fast to respond and has a touch feedback that you will really love.

the UI is REALLY fun to use!The navigation is pretty simple and intuitive. These days, comparing something to Apple has become a standard that cannot be helped. This new UI and navigation design from Sony is probably the next best thing after an iPod Touch when it comes to the interface. One thing is for sure though – the sound quality is much better than any iPod. That’s because that is the Achilles’ heel when it comes to the iPods – they do not sound that good to a discerning audience. If you are an audiophile, chances are that you already know this.

This Walkman device from Sony (Walkman is a Sony brand name and always was, please don’t get confused) has every feature that you can ask for. It does images (JPEG), video (AVC, WMV, MPEG-4) and of course – Music (MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV). It is available in two capacities – 16GB and 32GB (flash memory).

The thing may be expensive, but it sure it high on style

New FW Series Sony Vaio With Blu-Ray

the sony vaio fw480j/tSony had introduced a new FW series Vaio laptop called the FW480J/T. It has Blu-ray and that is enough reason for many people to want to buy it. But before you take the plunge, here’s quick run down of all the features that you get with it (and all that you don’t).

There are a few crucial things missing in this laptop and for some people they are quite important ones. One feature that is likely to top the missing list for some of these people is the missing Bluetooth. Another problem is that is the display is not true 1080p. So even though the laptop sports Blu-ray, you will not get the full HD experience on this laptop.

The screen displays 1600×900 pixels, so you get a 16:9 aspect ratio, but no 1080p.

At the heart if the machine is a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a low voltage Penryn core. The FW480J/T comes standard with a 400GB 540rpm hard disk and 6 GB of RAM. It must be noted here however that the other laptops in this segment more than often sport a larger 500GB hard drive with a faster 7200rpm platter that does make some difference in the performance.

fw_top_right_keysAs for the design, Sony has always nailed it with their Vaio laptops. This laptop is no different, with an elegant design and a cool color-changing LED ring located on the hinge. The power button is also located on one side of the hinge and it looks really cool.

The keyboard is also quite good and is of the same style as the ones found on MacBooks and newer Asus notebooks. The keys are well spaced out, flat and have a short travel with a muted click. Keyboard like these are becoming exceedingly common and most people like them for their comfort and accuracy.

There are also additional multimedia buttons at the top of the keyboard but sadly they are not backlit. So good luck guessing which one’s which in the dark. The touch pad is quite good and its buttons are flush with it. The entire package makes navigation a pleasing experience on this laptop.

It has a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon graphics solution with 512MB of dedicated memory. It is good for casual gaming with most of the mainstream games but it is no Crysis machine.

It has one HDMI, one mini-firewire port (?), 3 USB 2.0 ports and a dual card reader supporting the Sony proprietary Memory Stick and SD card.

Bedol’s Water-Powered Clock: Yes, You Read That Right

water clock greenHave you always wanted to save the earth but never had the time for it? Well now you can save the earth while you keep time. This handy little clock has received a lot of exposure lately, thanks to is innovative working principles. Made by a company called Bedol, this is a handy desktop time-piece that keeps accurate time while being powered by just water and lemon! Water is the main ingredient here and you just need to add the lemon to kick start the  chemical process that generates electricity.

The company site says that the clock is good to run up to 6-8 weeks on a single tank. That makes it good for one and a half to two months. After this period, you just have to refill the tank. The discerning people would go ‘aha!’ here, thinking that this means the clock will need to be reset every time water is filled up. Well, this is not true because the company has planned ahead. The company website proudly declares that this clock will not lose its settings when it is being refilled because of a built in memory chip. We are assuming that it is equipped to remember the time for a few minutes while you change the water.

Filling the tank is simple – you just add natural water and then add a dash of natural lemon juice. Then you close the cap and you are all set. This is a very eco friendly product and although the site does not mention how long it can be expected to last, it can be deduced that it will run as long as any other LCD screen clock is known to last.

The best part about this clock is that it encourages environment friendly behavior by not needing batteries to run itself. Batteries are made up of chemicals that are extremely harmful when released in to the environment untreated. However, with so many batteries being used, most people do not bother finding out a proper disposal service/area for used batteries. It many countries it is against the law to improperly dump waste but it is hard to keep track of individual people breaking this law.

This is why, having cool alternatives like this is always a good idea. The water-powered clock is available in four attractive flavors colors – Green, Blue, Orange and Charcoal. Get yours today!
